PSC Weekly update – March 24th 2011

Email your MP by Wednesday to defend universal jurisdiction

MPs may have their last chance to defend our universal jurisdiction laws on Wednesday 30th March – in less than a weeks time. We need as many MPs as possible to sign Ann Clwyd’s amendment to take out clause 152 of the Police Reform Bill. The more MPs that sign the amendment the more likely it is that MPs will have to vote for or against Clause 152.

If Clause 152 is passed into law it would mean that a court would only be able to consider arresting war crime suspects on the say-so of the Director of Public Prosecutions, a Government law officer.

If we are to achieve real justice for victims of war crimes, we should leave these controversial cases in the hands of judges, who have full independence from the Government and are free to consider the merits of the case free from interference from politicians and diplomats.

Read why we are urging you to take action here: http://www.palestinecampaign.org/Index5b.asp?m_id=1&l1_id=3&l2_id=119.

If your MP has not yet signed the letter please send them a letter using our email tool http://psc.iparl.com/lobby/64 urging them to do so.

Urge your LibDem MEPs not to open up trade to Israel

The Liberal Democrat MEPs are due to vote as part of the ALDE group on Wednesday whether or not to continue to freeze the ACAA protocol (which, if opened up, would increase Israel’s access to markets including industrial and pharmaceutical product markets). It seems that some of the ALDE group went on a trip to Israel, and changed their position on the agreement.

ECCP have asked that you personally URGENTLY (today or tomorrow) write to Lib Dem MEPs to urge them to vote to maintain the freeze of ACAA. Please encourage others in your region to do the same.
